VI. I interviewed two individuals to see what their response would be to my (our) plan. Their responses are as follows.
Mr. John Schweitzer believes that,"The plan to require both parents consent is the proper way to go about any adoption process and should be a requirement for all states." Working with DCFS, Mr. Schweitzer also knows about and brought up the Baby Richard case which was a tragedy that happened in Illinois. In agreement with Mr. Schweitzer, Mr. Eric Morgan also thinks that, "[...]dual consent is necessary to ensure the proper measures are carried out for the care of the child and to make sure everyone is in agreement about the situation." The only hickup he sees in the process might be that divorced or seperated parents may not see eye to eye and may not even want to get the consent of the other which could draw out the situation if not halt it altogether.
VII. My (our) answer, based on our research, to their objections and concerns are:
Dual consent is not only a reccomendation, it is a must in order to give children up in this adoption reform law. To not do so would result in a revocation of the adoption papers with a sentence in jail for fraud and forgery of signatures on the documents and a substancial fine. Even with these punishments in place, a divorced or seperated parent has the same right as the other parent in deciding the fate of their child. One person cannot make the decisions for the other.
